D’Arcy/Simpson Presents: “Wither and Bloom” by Jordan Nobuko Baker and Xan Peters
D'Arcy/Simpson Gallery409 Warren Street
Hudson, NY
Join us for the opening reception of Wither and Bloom, including paintings by Jordan Nobuko Baker and sculptures by Xan Peters.
Employing the techniques of the classical Dutch Baroque Vanitas paintings, Baker creates still-life work of flowers, fruit, vegetables and skulls that explore themes of death, transience and renewal. They are reverently and sumptuously painted in lush, vibrant colors-their beauty ignorant of their impermanence.
Xan Peters also uses the skull as a symbol of lost corporeality and truth. He sculpts fine white porcelain to create skulls of extinct animals. These works serve as a voice for the voiceless, and as an insistence that we acknowledge our own powerlessness to tell our stories after we are gone.
The opening reception will be held on November 30th, 4-6 PM. On view through January 5th, Fridays-Mondays 12-5 PM and by appointment.
